- Technological advances and readily available computer programs have contributed enormously to current research in the area of Prosody but it is still generally considered to be an extremely complex subject, lacking coherent systematization, and full of contradictory evidence related to many different topics within the field. It may be due to some of these characteristics that this area of knowledge is not always included in courses related to the teaching of foreign languages. For example, the teaching of English suprasegmentals is not considered a priority in the majority of EFL/ESL/EIL programs. It is mentioned only superficially in course books and is very rarely included in the curriculum of graduate degrees which qualify teachers of foreign or second languages. Based on the principles of collaborative and student-centred learning, this talk will use examples taken from the Prosody course taught to first year undergraduate students studying for a teaching qualification in English as a Foreign Language at UFES in order to illustrate how the inclusion of self-directed research projects can stimulate a growing awareness of the importance of prosody as an important factor in the teaching of effective language communication.
