Simão Mathias Centennial: Documents, Methods and Identity of the History of Science
April 29-30, August 26-29, 2008

In 26 August 2008, Simão Mathias would have celebrated his 100th birthday. First PhD in Chemistry (University of São Paulo, 1942), in fact he was the first PhD in Brazil as a whole. An outstanding scholar and achiever, he was also a dreamer. For the History of Science, he dreamed, e.g. the establishment of a kind of a miniature “Library of Alexandria” specific to this field. This library would not merely be a collection of precious originals, but would also serve to nurture a group of scholars that gradually would develop a school. A part of this dream became true with the foundation of the research center that bears his name: Center Simão Mathias of Studies in History of Science – CESIMA – that has immense pleasure in celebrating his centenary. The present Workshop and Seminar are devoted to a subject matter that laid at the very foundation of CESIMA and which was a particular interest of Simão Mathias: Documents, Methods and Identity of the History of Science.
