The Wisconsin Protests
Erik Olin Wright and João Alexandre Peschanski

Abstract:
The demonstration by workers and students in Wisconsin, in February and April, marked a new phase in US political conflicts. Within a context in which Democrats and Republicans acted together in defense of austerity policies, the anti-union measures of the governor of Wisconsin led to the emergence of one of the major workers’ movements in the history of the United States, including the occupation of the state capitol by thousands of demonstrators for 17 days. The protests against the governor drew one hundred thousand people. In this article we describe the events and their implications for the class struggle and the political debate in the United States.

Keywords: United States.
