A vision of the current Latin American “populism” from the perspective of the Indigenous Movement
Félix Pablo Friggeri

Abstract:
In this article I present an analysis of the Latin American governments defined as “populist”
by examining the possibility of harmonizing their policies with the practical proposals and
theories of the Indigenous Movement. In principle I accept the classification of “populist” in a
basically positive form because it connects these governments with a native Latin American
democratic tradition and with the current possibility of its deepening. I also analyze some
elements of this tradition and its recent change in meaning.

Keywords: Latin American democracy. Indigenous Movement. Populism.
